In these cases, a space maintainer is recommended to hold the space for their adult tooth. Not having a space maintainer may lead to crowding of their permanent teeth. A space maintainer is not a replacement for having braces. They may still require braces even though they have a space maintainer present. This decision is specific for each patient and will be discussed if necessary.
